I'm Prof (Dr.) Vishwanath Sathyanarayanan, Senior Consultant & Academic Advisor, Dept of Medical Oncology, Apollo Hospitals, Benguluru.

About Dr. Vishwanath

Dr. Vishwanath Sathyanarayanan is a highly accomplished medical oncologist with a clinical fellowship from the University of Texas, MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, TX, USA.

He has an outstanding academic record with gold medals in DM, Medical Oncology (Kidwai Memorial Institute of Oncology) and MD, Internal Medicine (Kasturba Medical College).

He specializes in Lymphoma/ Multiple Myeloma, Leukemias and solid cancers (Breast, Gynaecological, Lung, Head and Neck, Gastro intestinal, Sarcomas and other rare malignancies).

He has published widely in journals with high impact factor and has over 45 international publications. He has won several prestigious awards including an Abstract Achievement Award from the American Society of Hematology (ASH).

Based on his achievements, the Apollo Hospitals Educational and Research Foundation (AHERF) bestowed on him the title of Professor in the Department of Medical Oncology in 2018. He has also been awarded the Promising Clinician Award in 2023.

He is the Managing trustee and Founder of the non profit Creative Portal for Oncology Education and More (CPOEM) Foundation.

He has also been nominated as a member of the ASCO Cancer Communications Committee. He was recently interviewed by the President of the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) which has featured in the ASCO Connection.

My approach starts with a thorough patient history and physical exam.

I take the time to deeply understand each person's unique circumstances, symptoms, and medical background.

This comprehensive assessment forms the foundation for personalized treatment strategies.

Basic Investigation

Relevant investigations which aid in obtaining diagnosis.

Imaging

Ultrasound / CT scan / MRI / PETCT where required.

Team approach

Comprehensive team of medical oncologists (Dr. Vishwanath S, Dr. Poonam Maurya, Dr. Kalyani and Dr. Shobha) with able hematologist Dr. Neema Bhat provide the state of the art advanced cancer treatment.

The team provides medical oncology, hematology, hemato oncology, stem cell transplantation and CAR-T services.

Treatment Approaches

Chemotherapy

One of the most important ways to kill cancer cells.

It acts on the DNA of the cell and damages it.

There are various chemotherapeutic regimens, both intravenous and oral.

Most chemotherapies have predictable side effects and are generally well tolerated.

Immunotherapy

It is a recent development and one of the novel therapeutic strategies.

Modulates the body's own immune system to kill cancer cells.

Used for several cancers with reasonable success.

Targeted therapy

We have entered an era of personalised medicine and precision oncology. Cancers occur due to genetic mutations (genetic defect). Targeted therapy targets these specific mutations to kill cancer cells. Generally very well tolerated with minimal side effects and improved outcomes. Several targeted therapies are oral and hence patient compliance is good.

Psychological support

The diagnosis of cancer is quite overwhelming for patients.

We provide comprehensive emotional support alongside cancer treatment.

2015 - 2016 I have also done a fellowship at the MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, USA.
